Fusion funding has historically shown a strong correlation to the price of oil.  it is beginning to grow again following the latest spike in oil prices.  Fusion funding (and other energy research activities as well) would benefit from a more consistent budget growth, rather than this kind of market-driven funding pattern.  It takes years to establish and carry out meaninful experiments to resolve the critical science and engineering issues for fusion energy. - jw
